Part I –Center Defensive Midfield (CDM)

Part II –Outside Back

Part III –Winger

Part IV – Center Back

In today’s post we’re going to be playing along with the conductor of the attacking symphony, the Center Attacking Midfielder (or CAM). Players in this position are often some of the most versatile and creative – and must truly combine all of the games attributes to be successful in this role.

What does a center attacking midfielder do?

Link the Attack

The CAM plays a critical role in linking a teams build out to their attacking play. As they are typically positioned between the midfield line and the forwards, CAMs act as a bridge in between the two units, connecting defense to the attack and ensuring the team shape moves forward cohesively.

As the team attempts to complete their build out and enter the opponent’s half of the field, you’ll often find the CAM darting in and out of space to either collect the ball at her feet, or making runs high to break the opposing defensive line.

Create Scoring Opportunities:

Once his team as completed the build out, the CAM is responsible for creating scoring opportunities for the team. The CAM will continue to work into gaps in the defensive line, collect the ball, and be dangerous either on the dribble or by playing key passes.

Score Goals:

The CAMs work doesn’t stop at just creating chances. She’s also expected to finish them when the opportunity arises. Having the confidence to hit the shot when she creates some space outside of the box, or the composure to put away the cross that’s come in from the winger is key to getting the job done.

What skills does a center back need?

Vision and Creativity:

Playing in the center of the pitch means that there’s 360 degrees of action around you. The CAM must have the vision to recognize defensive pressure or attacking options in every direction and the creativity to use each situation to their advantage.

Technical Ability:

Often playing in the tight, central areas of the field the CAM must-have excellent technical ability. A quality first touch is essential to ensure the ball isn’t lost before the CAM can assist in launching the attack.

Decision Making

While working in limited space in the center of the field, time on the ball is sparse. An effective CAM must have the ability to anticipate the play and make quick and accurate decisions.

Physical Fitness

The CAM must be physically fit, as they will be expected to cover a lot of ground on the field and make runs into the attacking third. They must also have good agility and balance to avoid challenges and keep the ball under control.

Who to watch?

Kevin De Bruyne - Manchester City (English Premier League)

Thomas Muller – Bayern Munich (Bundesliga)

Martin Odegaard – Arsenal (English Premier League)

Mason Mount – Chelsea FC (English Premier League)

Christopher Nhuku– RB Lepzig (Bundesliga)

Overall, the CAM plays a vital role in the attacking phase of the game, and their ability to link the midfield and attack and create opportunities for their teammates is critical to the success of the team. A successful CAM must have excellent technical skills, vision, and an understanding of the game, and they must be able to make quick and accurate decisions under pressure.
