The Complete Guide to Soccer Positions: Center Defensive Midfield (CDM)

In soccer, the center defensive midfielder, often referred to as the “CDM” is a vital position that plays a key role in both defense and midfield. If you’re a player looking to hone your skills as a CDM, or a parent who’s just trying to understand what the heck their kid is supposed to be doing, here’s what you need to know.

As a bonus, check out the “Who to watch” section for a list of my favorite CDMs playing professionally across the world.

What does a CDM do?

Defend

The primary role of a CDM is to defend, often by sitting in front of the back four (the defenders) and providing cover and protection to prevent the opposing team from advancing the ball. This may involve marking opposition attackers, making interceptions, and breaking up play. CDMs are also expected to defend 1v1 and win tackles in the central areas of the field.

Distribute

A CDM should also be able to distribute (pass) the ball effectively to support her team in build their attack. Depending on the teams play style – this will primarily by playing short, simple passes to teammates nearby or by hitting longer balls to the forwards or wingers higher up the field.

Support the midfield

In addition to defending and distributing, a CDM should also support the midfield and contribute to the team's attacking play. This may involve making runs forward, providing an outlet for passes, or even scoring goals.

What skills does a CDM need?

Tackling

A CDM should be proficient in tackling, both to win the ball back and to disrupt opposition attacks.

Reading the Game

As the central areas of the field typically draw the most intense pressure for the opposing team it is essential that a CDM can quickly analyze, anticipate and react to the surrounding situation. An extra moment of hesitation or one extra touch can be the difference between flowing into a successful attack or losing possession.

Passing

As mentioned above, a CDM should be able to distribute the ball effectively and make smart passes to teammates while under pressure from the opposing team.

Positioning

Good positioning is crucial for a CDM, as it allows them to cover ground, intercept passes, and make tackles effectively.

Physicality

A CDM should also be physically strong and able to cope with the demands of the position, including tackling, running, and battling for the ball.

Who to watch?

N'Golo Kante - Chelsea FC (English Premier League)

Frenkie de Jong - Barcelona FC (La Liga)

Casemiro - Real Madrid (La Liga)

Joshua Kimmich - Bayern Munich (Bundesliga)

Wilfred Ndidi - Leicester City (English Premier League)

The role of a center defensive midfielder is a vital one in soccer and, in my opinion, one of the most challenging. That says a lot coming from a former winger!

They are responsible for defending, distributing, and supporting the midfield. To be successful in this role, a player should be proficient in tackling and passing, and have the physical ability to win challenges. With these skills, a CDM can (and will) make a big impact on both sides of the ball.
